![]() ![]() Literature review: International perspectives of body outline drawingsĪrt therapy can provide supportive treatment for patients dealing with addiction and can be a part of a meditative and spiritual practice (Feen-Calligan, Citation1995). In this case report, a brief case vignette was reproduced from the patient’s limited medical treatment notes for the purpose of introducing the patient. As a qualitative methodology, case study research encompasses a great deal more complexity than a case report, which focuses on normal clinical practice (Alpi & Evans, Citation2019). Stake ( Citation1995) writes about case study research methods including research questions, fieldwork, planning, management, analysis, and writing. Kapitan ( Citation2018) states that one of the characteristics of case study research is incorporating reliable and valid measurements that allow comparison. Although some suggest that the terms case report and case study are interchangeable (Case Study/Case Report/Case Series, Citation2020), others distinguish between case reports and case studies with the latter being described as systematic research (Alpi & Evans, Citation2019 Porcino, Citation2016). Qualitative research often makes use of cases to illustrate findings and includes analysis of observed themes and reflections (Kapitan, Citation2018). Case reports focus on clinical case documentation, sharing events, and intervening with single patients with previously unreported features (Alpi & Evans, Citation2019). ![]() Writing an effective case report includes opening with a vignette to assist readers in connecting with the case as well as in examining how the case changed over time (Stake, Citation1995). All names have been changed to protect patient confidentiality and informed consent has been obtained. There are five therapeutic goals of creating the SBOD for substance use disorder, which will be described in this case report that documents the patient’s art, verbalizations, and behaviors. This case report introduces mindfulness in combination with a transpersonal, person-centered, and somatic approach (Grof & Grof, Citation1989 Hanh, Citation1991 Malchiodi, Citation2019 Rogers, Citation1951). Focusing-oriented art therapy includes establishing a sense of safety and integrating empathic reflection (Rappaport, Citation2009). Mindfulness is a practice found in Buddhism that involves bringing one’s complete attention to the present experience (Kabat-Zinn, Citation2005 Malchiodi & Rozum, Citation2012). Three aspects of mind-body intervention that can be applied to art therapy practice are: mindfulness (Kabat-Zinn, Citation2005), somatic therapies (Malchiodi, Citation2019), and focusing-oriented techniques (Rappaport, Citation2009). ( Citation2006), is an approach that integrates mind and body. Likewise, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, developed by Ogden et al. For example, Somatic Experiencing is a mind-body and somatic approach to trauma recovery developed by Levine ( Citation1997). Mind-body interventions are posited to develop the mind’s ability to help the body recover and heal (Malchiodi & Rozum, Citation2012). This art therapy intervention is embedded in a mind-body approach. This case report introduces the SBOD, an application of the small body outline drawing intervention which was created by the author. ![]()
